Why a vibrant, energised city matters for Christchurch’s economy.

Alison Adams, CEO of ChristchurchNZ

Christchurch has felt more alive over the past few months. Packed sporting events and concerts, bustling streets, and a growing feeling that Ōtautahi is the place to be. That vibrancy is critical to how the city grows.

Cities succeed because people choose to live, work, study and invest there. Those choices are shaped not just by jobs, but by energy, lifestyle and opportunity. A vibrant city makes it easier to attract talent and investment – and helps local businesses grow with confidence. That’s why tourism, events, and economic development go hand in hand.

Events like Electric Avenue, Supercars and Super Round are good examples. Beyond the headline numbers, they bring people into the city, support local hospitality and retail, and introduce visitors to Christchurch as a place they might return to – not just as tourists, but as future residents, students or workers.

Once we have secured an event, one of ChristchurchNZ’s roles is to maximise its impact. Fan trails for Super Round, media features on Australian television, pop-up concerts on the tram – all of this helps build a legacy of lasting value: repeat visits, increased confidence and more people choosing to build their lives here.

A vibrant Christchurch is essential to our continued growth as New Zealand’s best city.
