Mop it like it’s hot

Robot vacuums all claim to do everything these days. They vacuum, mop, avoid obstacles, empty themselves, and even dry themselves. Some might even make you coffee if you wait long enough. The ECOVACS DEEBOT T80S OMNI doesn’t introduce anything groundbreaking, but it does improve on a few important features, especially in mopping. Metropol’s Gadget Guy Ian Knott takes it for a ride.
The key change is the switch to a proper roller system as seen in the recent ECOVACS pricier flagship models. Instead of dragging damp pads across the floor, the T80S uses a rotating mop roller. This makes a noticeable difference. It applies real pressure, allowing it to tackle marks that usually require a second pass, like dried footprints and kitchen spills. It works closer to a light scrub than just a wipe.
This pressure is supported by some impressive numbers – 3800Pa of mopping pressure, which initially sounds like a marketing gimmick until you see it in action. It doesn’t merely glide over surfaces; it leans into them slightly. The result is a noticeably cleaner finish without the streaking typical of flatter mop systems.
Edge cleaning has seen improvements, too. Corners and skirting boards are where many robot vacuums struggle, but the T80S performs better than most. It reaches further and tracks along edges more purposefully instead of just passing by. While it doesn’t replace a thorough edge clean, it does lessen the need for manual intervention.
What’s really interesting is how it adjusts itself. The T80S constantly changes its actions based on the surface underneath. When it moves from hard flooring to carpet, the mop lifts while the suction increases. If it encounters a spill, it changes to a more precise cleaning pattern. It reacts to larger debris and different floor types rather than simply using the same settings.
On the vacuuming side, it has impressive power. ECOVACS claims up to 24,800Pa of suction, which is top-notch. In practice, it easily handles everyday debris and works well on pet hair. An anti-tangle system ensures you won’t spend time pulling hair out of the brush. This feature alone may convince people who have struggled with older models.
Navigation has also seen quiet improvements. The T80S moves purposefully, recognising objects and working around them instead of bumping into them. It handles furniture, cables, and other obstacles smoothly. Its lower profile helps it slip under furniture without getting stuck, a small upgrade that makes a difference over time.
Then there’s the OMNI station, which handles much of the behind-the-scenes work. It washes the mop, dries it with hot air, and empties the dustbin. This reduces how much manual involvement is needed. The drying cycle is especially useful since a damp mop in the base station is far from ideal. This feature addresses that concern without you having to think about it.
In everyday use, this is where the T80S shines. You won’t need to empty it after every run, rinse pads, or constantly check on it. It goes out, does its job, returns, and takes care of itself. While this has been the promise of these systems for a while, it has only recently started to feel fully realised.
It’s also important to note that this model is priced lower than ECOVACS’ top-end options, coming in at $1999. This is significant since much of this technology has been confined to higher price points. This move seems intentional, making the advanced mopping system accessible without entering the premium price range.
That said, it’s still a considerable investment, and it won’t completely replace manual cleaning. There will always be edges, tight spaces, and the occasional mess that needs more attention. However, it does cut down on how often you have to think about cleaning your floors, which is the main goal.
What stands out after some time with it is that the improvements are practical rather than flashy. The better mopping, improved edge work, smarter surface adjustments, and reduced daily maintenance all matter. None of these features may be particularly exciting on their own, but together they lead to cleaner floors with less effort.
Ultimately, the T80S OMNI succeeds by not trying to reinvent the category. It simply makes the essential functions work better in the ways that matter when the novelty fades.
