Lockwood homes have been a feature of the New Zealand building market for 75 years and while earlier designs were simple answers to rural staff housing and holiday homes, the 1980s and 1990s saw design flair and home size flourish.
Since then, a great proportion of homes and commercial buildings crafted by the nationwide builder network have been created by many of the country’s leading architects.
As John Stewart, Lockwood’s Christchurch-based network manager says, “In the end, Lockwood is a solid wall timber building system that’s beautifully crafted, renowned for its strength in the face of earthquakes and cyclones, is low maintenance, and can deliver those attributes in understated or outrageous design forms.”
The use of the home, owners’ family size and lifestyle, along with the physical and climatic environments, dictate design direction, John says.
“Those inputs are given new and often unexpected life through architectural flair and a unique timber ambience. The exciting thing for our builders is the constant variation, challenge and the sharing of the owners’ excitement as the dreams become reality. “For many decades Lockwood devotees have eagerly awaited the next plans book or latest new forms,” adds John, as does the builder network.
