University of Canterbury graduate Emmalee Abbott Joe’s new role with United Kingdom-based B Corp certified trailblazer The Upcyled Beauty Company focuses on raising awareness of upcycled cosmetic ingredients and supporting beauty and personal care businesses to use them in their products. Her combination of formulation knowledge, commercial understanding, and entrepreneurial experience were valuable traits that impressed the beauty company’s team.
Her final-year chemical formulation design project, FROTH, placed in the global top 10 at the Red Bull Basement world finals in Tokyo, a global incubator and innovation competition helping students and first-time founders develop tech-driven ideas into practical solutions.
A dissolvable toiletries venture consisting of shampoo, conditioner and body wash tablets, Emmalee designed FROTH products to make travel with toiletries easier and reduce reliance on single-use plastic packaging.
Emmalee is continuing to work on FROTH while building her knowledge of the international beauty sector through her job at The Upcycled Beauty Company. She says persistence has been central to creating opportunities. “I apply for absolutely everything. You are going to get rejected for lots of things, but you will get accepted for one, and then it snowballs from there.”
