Makeup artist Tessa Taylor takes you inside the tips, tricks and trends of the wedding day trade.

What should brides consider when planning their wedding day hair and makeup?
My number one tip is to find a makeup artist or hairstylist whose portfolio genuinely reflects what you’re after. We all have our own style, so finding someone with work you love makes such a difference. My style is very glowy and neutral, with an emphasis on enhancing your natural features. I always want my brides to still feel like themselves. For hair, I love sleek, timeless styles that feel polished but still like you.

Be mindful when choosing inspiration photos. So much of what we see online now is AI-generated or heavily edited, so I always recommend saving two to four screenshots from your makeup artist’s own work rather than relying on Pinterest or social media.

A few looks you love is plenty.

What are your tips and tricks for brides to prepare their skin base for the best-looking makeup come wedding day?
Hydration! Drink all of the water! It’s one of the best things you can do for your skin. I’m also loving Korean skincare at the moment. At the bare minimum, invest in a great hydrating moisturiser. I really like the Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Aqua Gel Cream. And don’t panic about your skin six weeks before the wedding. Skin works in cycles, so if you’re wanting to try treatments or make changes, I’d recommend starting well in advance so you have plenty of time to see how your skin responds.

What trends are you seeing at the moment; are there any that are timeless or should be left in the past?
Hydrated, glowy skin and blush are in, and I’m here for it. I love that brides are wanting to emphasise their natural beauty. I’m also loving pared back eyeshadow and a simple lash. How lush! Soft, fresh and effortless makeup is one of those looks that will always photograph beautifully. As for things that should be left behind, I’m a big believer in doing what makes you feel your best rather than following a trend.
