Be a perfect ‘pawrent’ this Christmas

Christmas is all about family – pets included. Here are five ways to give your pet a magical Christmas.

1. Show me the money, honey
Make a donation (in your pet’s name if you feel like sharing the love) to pet charities such as SPCA New Zealand or Pet Refuge NZ. Donating much-needed funds, or volunteering your time, supports animal welfare and helps make the world a little better for our furry, feathered, and scaly friends.

2. Photo keepsake
Express your love for your pet with a photoshoot. This Christmas, Santa is welcoming all members of the family including those with paws, tails, and whiskers. Animates is proudly sponsoring Westfield Santa Pet Photography, a much-loved festive activity for pet owners. Everyone has the chance to include their furry companions in much-loved Santa photo traditions. Whether you’ve got a playful pup, a chilled-out cat, or a curious rabbit, most small pets are welcome to join the fun. Dress-ups are encouraged, so pop your pet in their cutest Christmas get-up and capture a photo to treasure for years to come. From matching jumpers to tiny elf hats, it’s all part of the magic. Every participating pet will receive a special Animates treat on the day (while stocks last).

3. Christmas-themed meal
Make the day extra special for your pet by giving them their own Christmas dinner. Best of all, they can enjoy their treat while you eat yours in peace without them hovering around the dinner table, ready to pounce on any food that drops on the floor. Dogs and cats can enjoy many Christmas dinner staples – just ensure they are left plain. Unseasoned foods like Brussels sprouts, pumpkin, and cooked meats, including turkey, chicken, and beef, can be part of their special meal.

4. Be mindful of the festivities
Understand the dangers that Christmas poses to pets. Make sure that your decorations are pet-friendly (avoid tinsel and protect electrical cords), don’t leave food easily accessible, and learn about harmful festive foods. Common foods pets should avoid include ham, mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, cheese, and sugary desserts.

5. ‘Beat the heat’ gift
Give your pet a gift to help them beat the heat this summer. Cooling mats, vests and bandanas, and paddling pools, are just a few options. Frozen treats are another great cooling aid.
