Artists unite for local kids

Three local artists share why they’re putting their work under the hammer again for The Big Art Auction Fundraiser’s second year supporting youth mentoring in North Canterbury.

After raising an incredible $16,000 in its first year, The BIG Art Auction Fundraiser is returning to Rangiora on Friday 2 October. Presented by Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Canterbury in partnership with the Rangiora Art Society, the evening will feature live and silent auctions of paintings, textiles and mixed-media works donated by artists from across the region.

Returning contributors include Sharon Soderberg-White, Graham Williams and Greg Anderson, who are each supporting the fundraiser for a second year. Sharon, a grandmother of five and adopted grandmother of two, has donated her striking acrylic painting Lest We Forget. “After last year’s successful event, I feel privileged to continue my support by donating another artwork,” she says. “Big Brothers Big Sisters is important to me because of the difference it makes for children and families.”

Graham has donated King St, depicting a familiar Rangiora scene. “I know the difference a good mentor can make in a young person’s life,” he says. “I am pleased to help Big Brothers Big Sisters continue supporting young people in our community.”

For Greg, whose family previously benefited from the programme, the connection is deeply personal. “Being involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters has been life-changing for me and for so many other families throughout North Canterbury,” he says. “Having the opportunity to give back through my artwork is an honour and something I am very proud of.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters matches local children who need extra support with safe, caring volunteer mentors who show up consistently and are there just for them. Manager Ellie Le Gros says funds raised help recruit, screen and train volunteers, carefully create new matches and professionally support those relationships. “Last year showed what can happen when a community gets behind its young people,” Ellie says. “Every ticket, raffle entry, drink purchased and winning bid helps give a local child someone in their corner.”

The Friday-night fundraiser will officially launch the Rangiora Art Society’s Spring Exhibition, giving guests a first look and first pick from more than 700 original artworks.
