As the old adage goes, charity begins at home. If you’re looking for a way to make a difference this Christmas, support the meaningful mahi of hard-working charities in Christchurch and beyond.

The Christmas Joy Store

The Kindness Collective runs the Christmas Joy Store annually, taking donations from individuals and organisations to provide over 60,000 Kiwi children with the magic of Christmas. Support by donating $100 which can provide a family with food for Christmas and a present for each child, or host a physical/virtual giving tree as a workplace. kindness.org.nz/joystore

Kairos Feeds the Food Banks

Local food rescue non-profit Kairos is calling on Cantabrians to come together to help feed families. In 2025, demand for food support is higher than ever. A donation as small as $10 helps feed up to 30 people by rescuing, sorting and redistributing nutritious kai across Canterbury. Get involved by donating, fundraising, or spreading the word, so no one goes hungry this Christmas. kairosfoodrescue.org.nz/feed-the-food-banks

Give What You Can

The Salvation Army invites New Zealanders to Give What You Can and bring joy and hope to families doing it tough. Their 2025 appeal reflects the ongoing cost-of-living pressures many whānau continue to face and encourages generosity in whatever form people are able to offer. Local churches welcome donations of new gifts, festive treats, and food items. Monetary donations are also especially appreciated and can be made securely by visiting the website. Supporting Salvation Army Family Stores with second-hand items helps provide affordable gift options for others this season. Or, explore the Gifts of Hope platform for meaningful ways to support wraparound service at salliesgiftsofhope.org and salvationarmy.org.nz/Christmas

Support a Family

The Support a Family Christmas appeal brings joy to hundreds of families in need every year by matching donors to families to provide them with a personalised hamper. The Christchurch Methodist Mission (CMM) is one of the largest social service agencies in the Upper South Island. Christmas can be a challenging time with mounting financial pressures for the whānau that we support. For over 16 years, our Support a Family appeal has ensured that these families do not miss out on Christmas by providing them with a hamper that includes food and presents for the children. World Vision

Help transform the lives of children and families in need with a gift from World Vision’s gift catalogue. Take a leaf out of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas?, and remember those facing hunger, hardship, and uncertainty by choosing ethical, life-changing gifts that truly matter. Gifts funds vital projects in education, health, emergencies, farming, and nutrition. For example, gifting a goat helps provide milk and drive business enterprise, while providing a toilet improves community sanitation and health. For those wanting to make a big impact, you can gift the top 10 bestsellers for $305 – including a goat, chicken, immunisation, vegetable garden, emergency food, clean water, seeds, seedlings, mosquito nets, and education support. Foster Hope Christchurch

Sadly, most foster children arrive at their new placements with nothing but the clothes on their backs or with their belongings in a black rubbish sack. Foster Hope provides basics for children entering foster care with kits containing a bag, carryall bag, personal hygiene items and comfort items. The team is now accepting new, unwrapped gifts for distributing to Canterbury children in foster care. fosterhope.org.nz
