The alpine village’s perfect ambience is thanks to its striking glacial lake, warm hospitality, and range of activities. Spend a weekend or longer, make it your base for day trips to Aoraki Mount Cook or Queenstown, extend your Race Tekapo visit… this is where winter memories are made. Here’s a two-day guide to making the most of your time in Tekapo.
Day 1
Start your road trip early to beat the traffic, and arrive in Lake Tekapo mid-morning for a delicious brunch at a local eatery before a busy day of winter fun. Take an obligatory stroll around the lake, taking in the scenery (and burning off your breakfast).
Head to your accommodation – from luxury apartments to tranquil lodges, make sure to book in advance – unpack, and change into snow gear for an afternoon on the slopes.
Find a chic spot for après-ski activities, settle in with a glass of wine and a glorious dinner.
When the dark sky deepens, the stars are calling. Tekapo is one of the best places for stargazing in the Southern Hemisphere.
Day 2
Rise and shine with a cosy coffee or hot chocolate at your accommodation, before heading into town for a bite to eat. Spend the morning in zen with a pamper package at any salon, or soaking in the pools amongst breathtaking views (try the snow tube if you’re a thrillseeker).
When your stomach starts to grumble, trek to Rapuwai Lane’s block of shops and grab a takeaway pizza, before setting across the McLaren Footbridge to enjoy it by The Church of the Good Shepherd and Sheepdog Memorial.
Visit any final shopping or snack destinations before making the journey home, refreshed, rejuvenated, and eager for your next trip.
